FAQs
What does a doula do?
1
A doula provides non-medical emotional, educational, and physical support during pregnancy, labor, postpartum recovery, and many reproductive healthcare experiences. My role is to help you feel informed, supported, grounded, and cared for throughout your journey.
Does insurance cover doula support?

At Lost Coast Doula, I believe every woman and family deserves access to compassionate, evidence-based support, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Some insurance plans, including Medi-Cal plans, may cover doula services for eligible members. Coverage and authorization requirements can vary, so I’m happy to help you look into your benefits and explain the next steps.
Private-pay services, packages, and payment plans are also available for families without coverage. My services have set rates, but I also offer payment plans, sliding-scale options when available, and community-supported care. Families who are able to contribute more or make a donation help make it possible for another family to receive support at a reduced cost. I am also open to bartering or trade when possible. If cost is a concern, please reach out. I am happy to talk through options and find a plan that feels manageable for your family.
You can reach out at any point during pregnancy. Some families hire a doula early so they have ongoing support and plenty of time to prepare, while others contact me closer to their due date.
Availability can become limited, so reaching out sooner gives us more time to get to know each other and plan your care.
When should I hire a doula?

What if I’m not sure whether I want a doula yet?

That’s completely okay. I offer casual coffee chats and consultations so we can connect in a relaxed environment, answer questions, and see whether doula support feels like the right fit for you and your family. Book a consultation now and read more about doulas here!
I support families planning unmedicated births, epidurals, inductions, cesarean births, vaginal births after cesarean, and births where plans change unexpectedly. My job is not to encourage a particular type of birth; it is to help you feel informed, respected, and supported throughout your experience so when you look back on the experience, you shine with confidence and joy! This is such a spectacular moment of your life, I’m honored to support you through it.
A consultation is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation where we get to know each other. Its usually over a smoothie, or pizza.
We’ll talk about your pregnancy, your hopes and concerns, the type of support you are looking for, your history with pregnancy, and any questions you have about my services. It is also a chance to see whether my personality and approach feel like the right fit for your family. Everyone is different, and there are plenty of doulas in Humboldt county who would be so happy to support you!
